An alternative to 'Winter Wonderland'...

For anyone thinking of going to London's Winter wonderland in Hyde Park... Don't!

Avoid it like the plague. Any tales of winter magic to be found there are false fantasy. It's a disaster, a baited trap with the intention of robbing you blind this Christmas.

It's a disgusting place. Selling itself as a place to experience all things we associate with winter and xmas goodwill when really it's an officious sprawl of wooden trinkets and overpriced beer. A rebranded concentration camp for pissed up zombies who feast on german sausage. The amazing thing is you can leave, but people choose not to!

So here's my alternative to all that. enjoy whats around you. Things aren't nearly as bad as they say they are but are definitely more beautiful...

Studio Time...

For Dereks online shop

It has to be said, product photography isn't really my thing. I knew that on the first day of my work experience at a photography studio in London. It looked such a lonely and ungratifying strand of photography. Stuck in a room with no natural light and pile of toasters and desk chairs to photograph. Bleak if you ask me.

So when I was asked to photograph some products for a new and innovative online shop, DEREKS, I knew I wasn't going to let it be like that. Mainly as there is no substitute for natural light... and we couldn't afford to hire all the fancy kit!

DEREKS is a fresh new way to shop online. all the products are british by design and are curated into shop windows of different price brackets.

Inevitably there were hours of editing to be trundled through but we tried to photograph outside where possible and most importantly the brief was to keep the shop 'windows' creative and colourful while hopefully allowing each product to sing.

I hope we did the products justice.

Putting pen to paper...

For the first time in a while I sat down and sketched. Really enjoyed the franticness of scratching down these figures before they walked away to catch their train.

Here I have put together two separate sits from two separate stations. A station in Cologne & London Waterloo.

.............................

The white lines you see are the impressions from the pages before and after, I quite like them. It adds dynamism to the images. Helps give the impression of a bustling big city station while still allowing the isolation of the figure. Something thats quite difficult to achieve with photography.
